Rydia Photo Shoot

We went out and did a photo shoot for the Rydia costume in some lush lawn settings. It was a damn hot day, but I'm glad we got em.

Reference Images^ for anyone who doesn't know the character her name is Rydia, from the SNES game Final Fantasy IV (Which has since been rereleased on PSone and DS so if you haven't played it no excuses!) Final Fantasy IV was my first real RPG. The Character of Rydia impressed me, last remaining summoner of a destroyed village called Myst. Rydia joins the party with great resist and travels with Cecil till she is lost at sea. The party rediscovers her in the land of the monsters being taken care of by summon creatures where she has aged to adulthood. She's a cool ass character and I was really excited to finally complete this costume.

Connecticon 2010 - Con report

Connecticon 2010 has come and gone. This was my first year at this con and it was a total blast. Here are my take aways -

1) Connecticon is more of an everything con. The gaming (both of the video and tabletop varieties) is more prevalent which is awesome.

2) There weren't a disgusting amount of lines. We strolled into the FMVs a little late to find plenty of room. We waited for the dating game for like a half hour, and my friend K waited to get into the masquerade for a half hour as well. We didn't have to wait in line for badges or hotel check in - a very welcome change from other cons.

3) The masquerade was smaller and the organization between masquerade and costume contest was smooth. It felt run well and as a participant I never felt frantic about the experience. It was also more laid back feeling and smaller which I really enjoyed.

4) This dealer's room could sell candy and soda! Yay! I missed being able to buy candy and soda at cons!

5) I really enjoyed the attendees at this con, everyone seemed really friendly and nice.

6) I'll definitely be back next year, this con was super fun.

7) I highly recommend getting help with bags from hotel staff, this is the first time we enlisted the help of bell hops and valets and it made everything SO much easier. The staff at the hotel was awesome.

Con preparation - Just what is the week before a con like anyway?

Some people may wonder what the week before a convention is like for a cosplayer like myself.

In past years it has been a week of no sleep, all nighters drastically trying to finish costumes. As i have gotten older and my time management has gotten better its been less about finishing and more about refinement. Here is a cliff note version of my week of preparations -

Saturday - Ran Errands, bought all make up needed for extra crazy cosplay looks ($65 Ouch), Rehearsed skit and really started to examine choreography.

Sunday - Rehearsal again

Monday - Did some minor finish touches to my friend's Bad Girl cosplay, also went out and got expensively painted acrylic nails put on (this was done to help complete the Amano look I have been striving for)

Tuesday - took care of some loose touches around the house, went to work, rehearsed after work

Wednesday - Last of the con errands (or so we thought)

Thursday - convention grocery shopping (because con food is expensive and not always available, you should always pack your own waters, gatorades, some chips and granola bars.) Rehearsed, did final skit revisions, PACKING, Direction searching and all that fun stuff.

Tomorrow morning is Friday and we will be leaving early a.m. in our costumes to hit the convention. Thats right tomorrow it's on like Donkey Kong.

Long Time - No Post

Apologies to anyone who has visited the blog recently and seen the lack of update. I'm in the process of buying a home and it's been terribly time consuming. Further more I have had to cancel my Anime Boston plans due to the house process :/ Which I am very disappointed about. I have slowly been making progress on Rydia though so that's encouraging.

Mean while this past weekend I was able to attend PAXeast with work so that was interesting. Not big in the cosplay department though so I'm not sure I have the con bug out of my system :) I am planning to attend a con in July to make up for my lack of Anime Boston :)

Sometimes You Gotta Clean House

I'm getting ready to continue cleaning out the costume closet. I had started the process about a week ago at my mom's when i collected all the costume stuff I had left there and either thrown some of it out or brought it on home. The stuff i brought home sat out for over a week since the closet was already quite full, finally last night I tried some of it on, tossed some stuff and popped some stuff on hangers and wrestled it into that closet. Well Now i can't get into said closet so it's time to go through and clean stuff out. I'm actually pretty happy about it

Fall Costuming - Successful mission!

My Alice costume for Halloween is finished, huzzah! I have to get some good shots of it but I'm over all pretty pleased with how it turned out. I took some creative licenses with it and did some rework to the design because this is my 2nd Alice costume. I took some cues from Lolita style for the shirt construction and I think it came together nicely. Interestingly enough I was able to reuse the skirt from the Chi costume for this one so huzzah for less work and reusing old projects! ^^

My main issue with halloween however is that I'm incrediably indescive and there is so much to choose from. So I turn this choice to my friends. Check the poll to the right and please vote! Quick and Dirty Like

So this painfully long project of Rydia makes me crave getting something done quick and dirty like. Project Runway style. When your making an Amano costume you have the added challenges of translating loose watercolor-y drawing s into something tangible, it's great cause you can add your own flavor but, a challenge cause you have to keep it all still relatable to the original image. You also have to thinking about every piece of the costume. EVERYTHING should have it's own details. Every piece should link but be unique. It's not something to be rushed and it's something that you want to stop after each piece and think about the next steps carefully. Cause making the wrong choice can cost you some crazy hours. (Srsly the corset alone had to have been 30 plus hours). Im thinking I just need to make something small so I wont feel so stalled.

Some ideas -

Make my halloween costume - but that would involve choosing one :)
Make a bodice for the ren faire (already got the skirt! it has jinglies!)
Take a larger break and make my Alucard costume
Make a small B costume like Beatrix from Final Fantasy 9 or Kid from Chrono Cross

Halloween suggestions anyone?

I'm batting around a few ideas but Im not sure yet. Currently my head is thinking - Columbia from Rocky horror, Tinkerbell, some XB360 themed gogo dress. Generally my halloween costumes try to follow the them of - is it kinda slutty? and Will it possibly make other people in the room uncomfortable? My Wind Up Doll costume last year was perfect for this because it had the tall shoes, hot make up and hair but I had squeezed into what looked like a 7 year old's church dress (and yes it was a child's size 7 or 8... the night of the party my mom and Chris had to make a team effort to gold the back closed while the other one safety pinned me into it)

The Unexpected Added Pressures

The world of cosplay is a very strange one. As I'm sure we all know. One thing I'd like to bring up today is the unexpected side effects of getting into the hobby in relation to gaming.

Suddenly your not playing games based on review scores. You're playing based on how hot the costumes you saw in the ad were. You're playing games you never thought you would play in genres you had no interest in in search of that perfect masquerade outfit that will knock the judges on their ass. It's crazy.

Even crazier is the very common practice of making costumes from games or animes that aren't out yet, but you think you might like the character so you make it to try to get the jump on everyone. Worse is people that do no character research and just make a costume just cause and have no idea what the game is about. I know my heart sank when i saw pictures of an awesome Bioshock group and in then found that none of them had played the fucking game. It's one thing to do something because your friends are doing up a group and need another person. In my friend group if we are thinking of doing that then the game gets lent out and everyone plays it while we do the costume work. It's a completely different animal to take no interest in the back story of the costume. How do you know your character doesn't die early on? (cough Claves Eternal Sonata) or is just incredibly annoying? (Penelo FFXII). The other issue I find with trying to cosplay from something still in production - it can change. I noticed some changes to the FFXIII characters recently and would be royally pissed if I did all the detail work only to be inaccurate to final product.

It's for all of these reasons that I try to get the full story of something before deciding to make it.

With Rikku I beat both games before making the costumes. I also made sure i got the dress spheres for the costumes that I made to ensure the class was in fact awesome. With Faye I finished watching bebop before hitting the con. With Ayane I played through her story in DOA4 and had played through her story in the Dreamcast version (Shit I even played DoA beach volley ball extreme 2 on 360). With Chi I had seen the entire show long before cosplaying her.I had beaten both Space Channel 5 part 1 and 2 before wearing Ulala, I even unlocked the secret costume in game that i wanted to wear. Though I would be willing to make something from some unknown source to do something with friends but I'd watch or play it before getting to the con :)

All that said I try to make sure i finish the game, unlock the character or outfit, watch the series, whatever before I make the costume. So here I am in the ridiculous predicament. I've been playing through Odin Sphere on and off for a while now. Just a bit of background for you, the game has 5 heroes. There are all with different factions and one by one you play through the game (and war they are in) and get to see the story from everyone's angle. I'm stuck on the first characters final boss. Looks like I'll have to do even more level grinding and that makes me a sad panda. When it comes to boss fights the game is just really challenging. The kicker is that the game has a really good story and beautiful art. Being the huge nerd I am I want to make a costume from it. So its just added pressure to get past this boss and progress in the game. It's very frustrating. I've seen quite a few cosplays from the game, tho part of me at this point wonders just how many of those people in fact finished the game. >_<

Progress Comes Slow

Life Minus TV.. Sort of

So over the past few weeks I had decided that I was going to cut down on TV. No Really. I found that my television addiction to get wrapped into any trash that happened to be on had really cut into well my entire life. I wasn't able to do anything else. So I decided I would do a major cut down. Basically weekdays I can watch a little while prepping for work and then the TV doesn't go back on till 10pm when adult swim starts up and i start winding down for beddy bye. Naturally there are some exceptions for example if I'm home alone and eating some thing i might turn it on to get some noise but after it is turned back off, or if I'm doing something horribly boring like folding laundry.

In the past few weeks I have done the following -

gamed way more, I finished Fallout 3 (minus broken steel because i felt they devalued my end actions in the final quest)
Read 2 books. Enjoyed them immensely
Joined a gym and started exercising
scrap booked
and just generally felt calmer and less rushed

I'm much happier these days without the TV. I strongly recommend it. I should be picking up on some sewing soon hopefully. If my muse ever returns to me.

Fire Works

Today is July 4. Independence day.

On this day being the total lack of a patriot that I am, my plans consisted of - wake up early, take Cheza to groomer, run errands in attleboro, nap, clean out desk, wait for chris to come home and light a sparkler in the back yard.

I had been told that Providence was not doing fireworks in the city this year and quite honestly I'm entirely too lazy to drive anywhere to see them, especially by my lonesome.

Sitting in my apartment this evening.. cooking hot dogs thinking "let's bring on the 4th with the power of hotdogs" what did my ears pick up? That unmistakable sound... too loud and glorious to be coming from someone's overly festive back yard. In an instant i threw on sandals, grabbed keys and had scampered out the door and was chasing the sound. First i hopped across the street and stood stationed in the alley way looking up, catching little teases, glimpses of the spectacle. I scampered down the alley and ran up 2 blocks and stationed myself on the corner of an intersection I know well and observed the event happening over and between the rooftops.

For a moment all the sounds of the pedestrians, the traffic was ignored and I watched the lights. Transported back in my mind to the first time i saw fire works, we were living on the airforce base and I thought i caught firework in my eye and that it would be blind. The energy was magnetic as people rushed down further to go watch excitedly. Cars were randomly honking excitedly, and for a few moments the city was magic. I actually thought to myself "you can't get this electricity in the country, cant catch this energy"

And it was at the end of this thought that I was ripped back mentally to being very aware of my surroundings. You see at this moment there was a car taking slightly too long to get through the intersection and the girl in the car behind it was honking like crazy and screaming the following- "MOVE I GOTTA TAKE A FUCKING SHIT!!!" HONK HONK "IM SHITTING MYSELF HERE WAITING FOR YOU TO GET OUT OF THE FUCKING INTERSECTION!!!!"

What's Performance Art with out an audience? Sad.

I often think of things like cosplay as performance art. You get all dressed up in a costume you spent months on and romp around in large groups of people, ramble of your favorite character sayings, and pose with your epic prop sword for photos.

What happens when your performance has no audience?

Every year it feels more and more like the convention becomes more focused on fads than ever. Naruto, Bleach, Death note.. it's all the same if your not cosplaying that show your out I'm afraid.

I had done a few years of Rikku in various costumes in the past, even won some awards for them and got an awful lot of attention for it. I was on so many random sites, blogs, etc it was insane. But that was when X-2 was real big and eventually you have to move on.

In 2008 I was dressed as Ayane from dead or alive 4, despite the fact that it was the hardest costume I have ever made (srsly who the fuck thinks vinyl and silk brocade belong together in the same dress?) and it was basically ignored cause it was a 360 game and as we all unfortunately have realized anime fans tend to lean towards Sony and Nintendo since it feels more japanese... The gamer in me feels like this is silly since 360 has such great support stateside. I to this day actually really don't like to talk about the Ayane cosplay since I feel like it's a failure. My mom thinks it's swell though...

In 2009 I was Ulala which was fun, I got recognized by a lot of people who knew me and had my picture taken a bunch. Oddly couldn't find any of myself after the fact but I really didn't try to hard so meh. The thing that made me a little sad was when we were hosting the dating game the crowd really didn't seem to know who my character was. I made some space channel 5 / sega power tennis references and it was horribly silent in the room.

I cosplay because I like the characters I portray, I like fashion and I like costuming. I just feel that at this point their is no audience or appreciation for the hard work put into such things. I mean it's fin and all but with little to no recognition on some projects can you really justify putting the amount of money and time into it? I used to really like to go for awards but I'm some what suspicious of the legitimacy of them when I hear things like con judges calling each other out on forums for special treatments for their friends.

So where's the audience? I guess if i decide to dress up as the latest fad at con I can run with the swarm and people will actually look at the work I've put into it.

Till then I guess I'm just stuck doing under appreciated labors of love. But every artist feels that way right? well at least people think what most artists do is legit art. They just think cosplay is a creepy hobby even we emply just as many methods to accomplish our end goals as any designers, painters, sculptors and photographers.

LocoRoco all good things come to an end... maybe sometimes that end level is a total bitch.

I finished LocoRoco the other day. I had been playing it on and off for a really long time as I do with most hand held games so it's been a very out stretched experience. I did the last world in an evening since I started to feel an urge to bring the game to a close and feel like i had finished it. Now the entire game up to this point had been hugely enjoyable, I loved the soundtracks, the characters, and the bright fun levels. It was a wacky fun experience.

Then i got to the last level which i found to be hugely annoying. I found myself thinking "I'm a fucking blob... how the fuck am i supposed to manage this?" there were lots of annoying little platform button pushing challenges that had been absent the entire rest of the game(thankfully). When i finished it i found myself thinking "well this was entirely too frustrating" and i felt no satisfaction in completing the game just annoyance and an urge to avoid the sequel.

Which leads me to think about the fact that games generally have the largest challenge at the final level. Most of them can avoid the point of frustration though, and occassionally while something may take you a few tries you feel satisfied over coming the challenge. I to this day cite space channel 5 part 2 having my favorite end level of any game. It had it's challenge and was a bit difficult at first but then it became so off the wall fun that you didn't even notice, you just got into it. Most final fantasy games these days have the end boss but aside from them there is a harder boss you can track down to take on if you want to prove how epic you are, but you don't have to deal with it if you don't want to. Maybe final levels should be about reminding you why you loved the game in the first place as oppose to pissing you off enough to not enjoy the ending you've worked so hard for. I'm not saying they shouldn't have a challenge, I;m just over the concept of "let's put in these horribly annoying traits into our final level to add challenge since we can't think of anything better" but maybe I;m just crazy :)

Motivation?

Sometimes the best Motivation is a dead line staring at you with it's very disgruntled angry face. When there is no dead line it can be really hard to find any motivation to get back into things.

Anime Boston was in May, It is now June 20, almost a full month has passed since the convention and I haven't touched my sewing machine. Keep in mind Rydia is still in progress and well nothing has been done with it.

I think one of the challenges that we all face with any hobby is that inevitably life steps into our path and just tends to muddy things up. I've been busy with work recently and learning some new stuff making me want to spend more time at the studio. I've also been doing quite a bit more gaming as of recent.

Fall out 3 is a wonderful time sink.

There is also the fact that there is always those little annoying errands, tasks and things that need to be done, need attention and usually rip at your soul they are so mundane and boring.

So How does one coax themselves to start back up? How do you remind yourself why your doing something when your not sure you even remember?

Maybe I'm just suffering a creative block right now but recently I have had no urge to do anything... I don't want to go anywhere, I force myself to pick up a controller, I'm in a new D&D campaign and have spent all of 10 minutes doing anything about my character outside of game, might just be the early summer blues. It is after all June and it hasn't been the sunniest of Junes past... its been very grey and depressing...

that's it... my procrastination and inability to want to do anything is the weather.... yes... indeed.

Anime Boston 2009

Hey Space Cats! This is Ulala Reporting on Anime Boston 2009!

Hur Hur I know i'm so campy... here's my con report any way ^-^

Anime Boston 2009 has come and passed here are my goods and bads

The Good -

Arriving a day early with plenty of time to eat, unpack and pick up badges was awesome
My costumes seemed really well received and that made me pretty happy
Bad Anime! Bad! was a truly awesome event that i think made all of our days
Pre registration flowed really quickly this year
we saw some cosplays that made us smile like the cockney from the mighty boosh. WIN
Good Meals at the con for the first time in years, every year i get violently sick and have to eat very plainly out of fear of vomiting. This year I only got sick saturday morning and was able to eat well the rest of the con :)
The Dealer's room was twice the size and had so much room to walk around, so much better.
Finally getting some good pictures of my costumes! So many years have passed now where we took none! I just wish i had been able to take even more convention pictures.
A lot of my friends went and we all had a good time.
Staff did an awesome job of keeping the halls clear.

The Bad -

This con may have been one of the worst organized events i've been to. I missed out on a lot of events due to lack of communication with organizers and last minute schedule adjustments and that made me sad and i felt like i missed out on a lot.
Getting sick the morning of doing the dating game, I'm glad i got the chance to host but I don't think I would do it again, i realized that the hosts don't get to do very much and I didn't feel like I had been clued into what was happening with it till i got there. Glad I experienced it though.
Lines were so long this year that we ended up in the balcony for amvs and couldn't get into the masquerade at all. le sigh.
The Game and Marco/Polo... I really wish these would die out all the screaming with them gave me massive head aches in lines and this horse has been made into glue its so long dead.
Cosplot - I always want to know what's going on with it, but always feel really confused since I don't attend every major event of the con.. this means i try to follow it and then just plain give up. I don't think that's any one's fault i just find it to be a trend of cosplot every year we go :(
I boiled in my costumes... i did hear some people saying the con center was too warm, but im not sure if it was just me in my heat trapping gear or the actual con center :)
Being trapped in the dealer's room because the masquerade line was routed in front of the door. WTF srsly?

Overall I think we had a really good time, but i think that was in spite of con organization issues. We got to have a much more relaxing experience this year because of our own adjustments to how we do a convention, but this con has definitely had it's better years. We will be back again next year and hopefully I will be able to participate in the masquerade next year after taking this year off.

Today is Sunday. The con is this coming weekend! ^^ That is both exciting and scary! I spent today in preparation mode. I went to target and bought my "con groceries" (gatorade, water bottles, snacks, etc.). I also tried on the chi costume with my new petticoat.... and it looks pretty awesome :). The packing process started today also.

Its exhausting. I hate packing for a con.

I have to make 800 lists to make sure i forget nothing and then go back and triple check to make sure i have in fact packed every thing i know I had.

Costumes are packed and I have started packing clothing options and make up. but ugh so much work!

I also finally took the time to print my confirmation pages for the hotel and con along with local restaurant locations.

Con prep week is indeed an exhausting one. >-<

Two Weeks till Boston!

Anime Boston is 2 weeks away, it's quite official now, and it's really exciting. I thought I would take some time to give people an idea of what the final week before a con is like so here is my to do list over the next two weeks -

2 weeks till con-

start the lists or what to pack, what groceries to pick up, and what booze to transport
Check over all the costumes and make sure all the pieces I need are ready, start thinking about how this still will need to be packed. For instance I had to buy a container that would safely transport the Ulala wig this year since it can't be put in a suit case where it could be crushed.
Do any last minute costume stuff.
Make up tests

The weekend before and week leading into the con -

The Epic errand runs happen. I go out and buy all the con essentials if I don't have them already. Dry goods I can munch on at the hotel, Medicines (Zantac and Tylenol), Booze (for Courage! lawls kidding), What ever my make up kits are missing, Any special under layers i may have realized I needed, etc.
Assemble emergency repair kit - safety pins, glue, velcro, needles, thread, double sided stick tape. You can never be too well prepared for a cosplay emergency.
Drop the dog off with my mum the day before the con
Pack X-x Packing for a con where you are wearing wigs, weird make up, and complicated costumes makes packing a nightmare.

So I just got the info for my web site. A friend of mine had started it awhile ago for me and just with out seeing each other and both of us being busy and lazy we never actually got the damn thing finished. So today he sent me over the passwords for it and i started to fumble around with it myself to try to make some sense of it. Yea that didn't go so well so now yummygamorah.com leads here :) at least it's not going to an unfinished site any more. One of these days I'll learn how to make sense of it though, mark my words.

Mean while I'm almost ready for the con save a few detail things. The final line up is Chi on Friday, Ulala on saturday and sunday no costume since usually as i had said before im costumed out and want to be left alone to wander the dealer's room and do hotel check out with out being crammed into an inevitably hard to move in costume.

I was looking over the cosplay.com forums this fine saturday morning and I came across a thread that struck a cord with me, as I have been having this debate with myself recently. It was a thread asking other cosplayers if they change out of their costumes before leaving the convention center to go get food. When I was younger and attending cons with my parents I didn't. I always wanted the outside pictures of the costumes and while romping around I had the safety of my parents their with me to make sure I was not kidnapped by scary Rikku obsessed otaku. Plus they were always great about taking pictures for me :). I haven't ever really asked myself "is this acceptable?" until just this year, the last two years I was sick for the con and wasn't leaving the con center at all. The year prior to that was my boyfriend's first year at the con with me and without my folks their. That year I was dressed as Faye Valentine and did have some great moments... like seeing someone with a bag from johnny cupcakes and running two blocks away from the con center to find the store... which was also stationed next to a hello kitty store. I ran and looked around without a second thought, i was, to be fare very excited about johnny cupcake. The following day we went out and ate while I wore a newly acquired japanese school girl costume. This year is the first one that I;m a little nervous about it, as Chris has taken a sudden turn to nervousness about going somewhere with me in costume. It seems that the bigger or more scandalous my costume is, the less likely it will be for us to go out somewhere and leave the con to get food. He refused going out with Ulala as the costume is really skimpy and bright, but agreed that Fuu and Chii would be completely acceptable attire since they are covered. Now I'm worried Fuu might be weird since It is a full kimono. I'm not sure why that one makes me feel weird about wearing it out, but it does. Strange. Maybe it's because it's so japanese and it's a sunday costume, sunday we get indian buffet and i think I'm scared that someone will think I'm just THAT stupid to think they are the same thing... hahaha. I'm thinking I'll probably wear it if I'm still feeling costumey the last day of the con and say fuck it and go to my buffet in it. :) Thought I am a little concerned about spilling on it... so we will see.

This does however bring up the interesting things of what makes these moments of cosplay outside a con so amusing and so scary :)

The Bad - obviously people stare, some shout random things at you like "Halloween is in October" or "Whore" and such depending on what you're wearing.

The Good - you get really good opportunities to get great pictures, Some people will recognize you and smile, laugh, take a picture with you and call you by your character. Other people will see you in a costume and not know who or what you are or why your dressed up, but smile because its out of the ordinary and interesting. It makes some people's days and its really fun when it does. It's a fun thing because being in costume and standing out like that for some reason breaks down the social barriers that we as humans keep up everyday. Suddenly random people are talking to you and smiling and laughing with you (yea i said with... yes some times its at too but who gives a shit?) it's as if suddenly the whole world wants to talk to you so they can leave with a story... its really weird and neat at the same time. Obviously this is fun if you are feeing social enough for it :)

Sometimes You Have To Push It Back

Today I made a major decision and it wasn't easy. I woke up this morning thinking more about my Rydia costume, how behind I was, and how much I feel like I'm missing out on fun stuff because I'm locked up working on it and getting no where. This is a costume that take a lot of tough decisions, fabric tests, money, and time. I put over a month into the corset and I can't see finishing EVERYTHING else for it in less then a month for the con. I'm also losing A TON of money on this costume and need more cash to finish it... at this point I need to call it and space some of this spending out. So I have decided to delay. I'll keep working on it, but more leisurely and not under the stress of a short dead line.

This weekend and next I'll be cleaning up my Chii costume and my Fuu costume doing the minor things they need done to clean them up, and then will be packing one or both of them for the con (I may not be cosplaying Sunday as usually when we hit that day in the con, I'm cosplayed out and want to be ignored to shop, go out to eat, and just enjoy the day). I'm a little disappointed but at the same time I'm looking forward to having some free time to actually play some of my much missed video games and my Chii costume hasn't even gotten to go to a con. Plus I know that in the long run it will help make this costume way more impressive if I get to put more time into it.

I suppose now it does... A month till the con and I'm boarding up in the house avoiding anything fun and all video games to work on this costume. There is also a major chance that Rydia will not be finished in time for Anime Boston 2009, it is very ambitious and I don't want to rush it and put it together poorly, its too strong of a concept to half ass. Mark my words here, if it's not on schedule by May 1 it's getting delayed and won't be coming to the con. It breaks my heart to have to do it but it might just have to happen.

Wish me luck all, and play some video games for me.

MIA or hard at work?

I just realized I have done nothing with my blog in a week. Well there's a reason for that folks.... it's 40 tills anime boston!!! I have been working slavishly for the past week... getting up an hour early veryday, sewing for an hour before work, coming home sewing till bed.

The good news

Ulala is just about done, I tried on EVERYTHING today together to see how it all looked... and well I was pretty fucking pleased. The jet pack sits a little wonky but that's nothing a big safety pin won't fix. All that remains is finishing her microphone and getting the leg strap for her gun to sit on... sadly mine will not be able to hold the weight of the gun and will just be for show. Thats the price I pay for having a gun that blows bubbles. Its really fucking cool but with it's batteries' its too heavy to trust to a cheap future garter.

The Rydia corset is just about done, it needs straps (but those will have to be a feat of engineering as I will be hanging cloaks off of it) and some top trip and it will be good

The Bad News

NOTHING else on Rydia is finished

this one may be too big of a project and it might have to stay home from the con. I have a back up costume in the closet if need be so no major worries I suppose.

Revisiting past moments

Today I visited my folks house... I had more painting to do on props which Odin willing, will be finished soon. While I was there though my mom and I got to talk about conventions past and she reminded me of some great moments.

We discussed discussed my costume progress thus far, as my mom is really one of the few people that can keep me encouraged through the process of making costumes on dead line and she did make the point that I'm already looking better than past years... I was reminded of two years ago when I was painting my Rikku sword in her basement very close to the con.

Her and my dad awoke one morning to find me rushing into their bedroom at 6 am (keep in mind i did not live there anymore at this point) to make the announcement of "I'm here!!! Did you know Starbucks is open this early? cause they are! They added shots of espresso to my coffee!!! Its great! Imma go paint the sword now kthxbai!!!!" *scampers out of room to the basement* I believe all they responded with was my dad expressing fear that I would give myself caffeine poisoning and my mom just responding with something positive for me being up and working nice and early....

Today was making up test day. I think I have Ulala down, great pink eyeshadow, bright bright lips, and my own flavor add of blue eye liner for contrast. I'm pleased with that look so it'll be good to go once i add eyelashes to it. The Rydia stuff I'm still working on its going to take a bit more finesse and color playing than I thought :) So that will need another few goes till I have that make up bag packed.

Frustrations

Everything always looks easier than it actually is, I know this, I am still how ever frustrated beyond belief when I have to rip up seams and undo two days work.... It's amazing just how unforgiving some fabrics are and how they are always the ones that have something go wrong when you're sewing them. So currently I am ripping the sleeves out of both the main dress and the lining, deciding not to line the sleeves and having to recut the arm holes and reconfigure the sleeves. Metallic Spandex is a bitch to work with because it keeps no shape... that makes it awesome in some ways but horrible when you need a structured sleeve. Hate.

I'm sure part of it is my need for perfection with things like this. Cosplay has such a bad rep for poorly made costumes that I have a need to make everything perfectly.

On a positive note I think I am officially done with special orders provided I don't fuck anything up and have to order more fabric :) Today I ordered the Rydia boots, eye lashes for each costume (random right? but you would be amazed the difference they make), a bag to carry with Ulala to keep crap in, and metallic aqua shorty shorts to wear under the Ulala dress.

alright enough bitching.... back to ripping seams I go...

Progress Reports

Okay from now on I think I will try to post my progress on costumage in a short sweet report to help me hold myself accountable for finishing things. It will hopefully give me some sense of reporting to someone and will maybe help me get my self to keep sewing. That said here is a small report on the past few days....

Saturday - Sewed together the lining layer for Ulala which is more work then one would think since only certain portions of it could have, but desperately needed it.

Sunday - Fit the lining and did more fitting on the dress, the back of the dress had a serious bagging effect so it had to be dealt with. I also ordered the gloves for Ulala and wig for Rydia from amphigory:) picture to the side here-> I plan to curl it a bit and it should look quite awesome.

Monday - Today I sewed sleeves onto the lining layer and sleeves onto the outer layer and Im pretty tired from the last few days... it has felt like a surprising amount of work.

Note that the front of the dress is all smooth looking, thats the interfacing nightmare at work. Or rather the results of my interfacing work >-<>

Today I worked on Ulala, I knew I had to work on it and i stared at it this morning for a it putting off actually doing it since I'm in the stage of weird fit issues, so it was going to be a laborous and probably annoying day. My answer to getting myself in gear was to drink champagne, put a movie on in the background and sew.

It was FANTASTIC

I felt like a french tailor in Versaille, it made my fucking life, in fact i would say that im gonna sew like that from now on, but then Id have an alchohol problem and be out a bit of money on champagne. It was a treat though, and for note the costume is looking pretty nice so far :) Photos will be up soon of progress!

Fabric came in yesterday! w00t! I had started some stuff on Rydia while i was waiting for it but I now have everything to make Ulala and the extra needed things for Rydia to work. Its very exciting but Now I'm quite overwhelmed as to what to do next, since now I can do anything! I suppose the best thing to do is stay on task and finish the Rydia corset before I do anything else, but the new Ulala fabric is so shiny....

Soooo to the left here you will see these pretty sequin stars.... also known as the bane of my existence. Each of the larger ones takes about an hour to sequin, the tiny ones take 15 minutes, and the mid size ones are about a half hour... I previously calculated that I may need about 28 of these guys for the Rydia corset... I'm beginning to rethink this plan....

Pulling Inspiration in

As planning on Rydia continues and work actually begins I am faced with a series of new and interesting challenges, I am taking a character that has many reference images all of which are revised and different and vary greatly I have been given the chance to pick and choose what I like and what I don't like for the costume and get to inject my own take into it as well. Its a very strange feeling.

I have looked over official art, sprites, and the various reincarnations of Rydia over many platforms and sunk hours into looking at fan art. That said I am also looking to other sources for ideas on this project also, as I feel like it takes many cues from many places so I have really pulled inspiration from the the circus, and things like the infamous moulin rouge video, the corsets in that video give me all kinds of ideas for how I'm going to go about construction... it's all terrifying and super exciting all at once.

Today it snowed... it snowed much more than those filthy liars in weather reporting land said it would this morning.... Soooo about the time we realized this was a problem and my boss was pushing me out the door because weather turned to shit it was 5 o clock... this is my photo reenactment of the car ride home.... that lasted over 2 hours.... in snow and rush hour...

So first off let me just say that I'm super stoked for the Ulala costume, its going to be awesome, super fin to wear and just a great time all around. We even think we may be able to get it set up to play space channel 5 music which is fucking gold in my mind :) That said, I'm at an impass here, I made a test dress it looks really good, i haven't test run the collar yet but that is because I think i know how I will do it and I will actually need a fabric order to come in to put that together. (Hello spandex house? this is Yummy and i need some spandex STAT!!!) So pretty much I am in wait mode since the order will probably run about $100 and I have to pre reg for the con off my next check which means I probably can't special order anything till mid february

To add to my creative frustrations I think I may have decided that the other costume I make will be from Final Fantasy 4 - Rydia since I'm not doing the masquerade this year this is a great opportunity to make a Rydia costume that combines elements from the PSone renders,ds renders, sprites, and amano art (since this is such a subjective project I have a hard time thinking how anyone would judge it so taking that element out of the equation makes this a great time for it) So since I have to do a bit of waiting for Ulala stuff ... I have this handy dandy gift card just waiting for me to buy some Rydia stuff with :) I'm just not sure if that's a bad idea because the effectively puts me working on 2 costumes at once and we all know how disasterous that can be but I'm really anxious for Rydia and i think the bead work would be a good weakly down time activity where as I don't really have any down time projects for Ulala.

for anime boston 2009 Yummy Gamorah is officially taking it to the halls! I decided not to do the masquerade but instead to just sign up to be judged in the hall cosplay, I'm super stoked. I have never done an anime boston with out doing the masquerade... NEVER! I always feel like i have to, but this year I just didn't really feel I had anything big enough to go up on stage with so I decided not to. I'm finding the joy in it again, and let me just say I'm all about strutting around as Ulala blowing bubbles with my space gun and randomly pretending to interview people. So now I feel really free to make which ever costume I want, it feels great. I've also made the choice to rip stress out of the con and will be shooting on making 2 costumes not 3 this year, Ulala and a 2nd to be determined when Ulala is done (I have some things in mind but nothing is solid yet). Free of the masquerade time block I am really looking forward to enjoying the con with Chris and my friends, with out that rain cloud over my head :) Now I just have to actually like get working.... tomorrow is a day off from work and I'm going to be getting some sewing done on my test dress I hope.

Today I began sewing up a test dress for Ulala, I altered a pattern this morning and had some scrap stuff of the kind of material I will be making it out of but as per usually my machine hates it. My sewing machine makes me quite sad sometimes... usually those times are when I'm trying to sew spandex anything >-< This time I'm actually wondering if my machine needs to be cleaned or serviced or might be broken because it is being particularly impossible. So I'm very frustrated... you would think I would learn to stop making things out of this material but its actually easier to work with than vinyl... I think the next project is going to need to be neither vinyl nor spandex... maybe a nice easy cotton. Cotton is love.

I am looking over my wig today, I have been mulling about it all week, its just about finished but i feel like it needs... somthing more? I Styled bangs in that i think actually look quite nice, but some styrofoam is showing through the pigtails ad I'm wondering what to do if anything about it. It's not hugely noticable but it's still there peeking out at me when i look closely at it... Unfortunately this project might just not be somthing im feeling this weekend. My last work week was pretty ccrazy so I'm wondering if I'm just responding to that and not wanting to do anything right now. Suddenly I have remembered all of my frustrations form last year all at once. :(

It has a very anime convention feel, we are holed up in warm rooms with too many of us in there, I'm constantly running around the hotel, and no one has slept enough dealing with the situation with the office. Nn the plus side we have been fed everyday, and it feels like coffee is readily and always available to me with little to no effort and for free.... Heart. :)

On another note my wig is just about done, i'm going to take a few days and then look at it again and do touch up work. Then it should be complete Huzzah! Then i can start wrk on the rest of the costume which inevitably will be way more work then previously expected.... but isnt it always? :)

Next costume tasks on the list are prop work and making a test Ulala dress to refine the pattern huzzah! its like preproduction but for cosplay

and my friend Kayla finally got me pictures of my Chi costume as she was the only one with shots of it thus far. my favorite is this one.... Chi loves strawberries ^-^

the wig of doom is nearing completion.... i hope.... i feel i have styled the pigtails in pretty decently, and I have pinned the bangs in place and am waiting for the glue to dry. After that I just need to do some touch up work to it as needed and it should hopefully be done... here is a progress shot ^-^ note the pigtail's fullness and cute little flip..... thank goodness for foam and elmer's glue. the bangs are not complete in this shot.

Wigs officially suck.

I have spent the past few days working on my Ulala wig and let me just say it has been horrible :) First i purchased a wig parted for pigtails but it was french curled... many hours later it was straightened at my hand with a curling iron on uber low heat. I thought that would be the hard part alas it was not. getting this thing back into pigtails was hours of work, i had to defrizz it cause it kept tangling, and getting this wig into evenly spaced high placed smooth pigtails was a major challenge.... many hour of pomade, spray in conditioner, spray bottles, and hair dryers... I think i like whre i am with it so far, there are still somethings i dont like about it and i have to actually style the pigtails them selves next and style the bangs, then hopefully it will be done.

2008 in retrospect

with 2009 fast approaching I'm pleased to sit and ponder what the last year brought me. 2008 had its ups and downs but is really going out on a positive note.

In 2008 I ....

moved to a new great apartment in a great neighborhood

went out and got me once of those fancy careers people keep talking about

played videogames

cosplayed at anime boston with some great friends (in 2009 we can refine our process)

had a halloween costume i was proud of

enjoyed life with my corgi

purchased my own computer

took a crotchet class

continued the adventure of life with chrisjack (4 years in february already wow)

met a lot of really awesome new people

dyed my hair red

... im sure some other stuff happened but you know how it is.

May 2009 be even better, here's to learning to new things at work, enjoying life in the new hood, and embracing the creative frustrations i have and making even MORE stuff this year ^-^

So I am currently planning for anime boston 2009. I know its December, convention is in May but I need to start early so I'm thinking ahead. coming to a yummy near you.... is this fabulous Ulala dress. I've been dreaming about it for years now and I am making it happen for anime boston this year! I am super stoked. While I'm feeling really anxious to start I'm a little sad because my funds just will not allow me to order my materials so I;m currently doing that whole patience thing where you wait. I'm going to work on the wig and accessories for now since I already have them, I'm going to be trying to do the accessories a little different for this one. thats right I am willingly deviating from an original design... i know I'm so rebellious but I think my changes will make for some awesome pictures ^-^ As for my other costumes... I haven't picked them yet... and my list of possibles is HUGE....
